This is a heavy-duty record, kind of how you would imagine the inside of Einstein’s head: moments of beautiful clarity surrounded by tense, anxious technicality. That ability to rein in all these frantic ideas really highlights one of the band’s strengths — control. This is trumped only by the solid playing throughout the record, which shifts unnoticeably between tracks on lush soundscapes. The drumming and guitar playing is technical without getting stale, while the keys embellish tastefully with ambient sounds and leads that don’t attempt to overpower. Lead singer Vinny DiFranco has got some goddamn pipes, that’s all I can say.
For some reason these guys always get lumped into the stoner-metal genre, which doesn’t make much sense. I’m sure there are plenty of people who will listen to this stoned, but the same could be said for a Willie Nelson record. Does that make it stoner rock? Writers are a bunch of dicks.

ohio sky Ohio Sky Curses

I discovered Ohio Sky lurking around on Twitter and what can I say? These guys are a diamond on a beach of pebbles!

The second I started listening to opener ‘Van Gogh’ I knew the album was going to right up my street. The song opens with blistering guitar work and heavy riffage and then slips in to dreamy vocals and guitar work. The songs section work very effective giving a light and dark effect, making heavy sound heavier and dreamy sound dreamier and this is the synopsis of the album.

Waiting for Time to Stop’ is a stand out point for me on the album, with its grunge style riff and its daydream feel, the vocals on this track are beautifully crisp and listening to it is like being wrapped in a warm blanket on a winters day.

Tracks like ‘Project Long shot’,  ‘S’ and ‘Curses’ show the bands heavier side with some heavy ‘Stoner Rock’ riffs mixed in to their sonic ‘Space Rock’ attack.

What Ohio Sky manages to do time and time again is paint a beautiful sonic landscape of noise with a crisp and polished sound.

These boys know what they are doing!

The singer can most certainly hold a note and has an amazingly powerful voice

They certainly know their ways around the guitars!

The bassist and drummer lock horns on most tracks to create a solid rhythm section.

Described on the bands twitter as ‘Face Melting Space Jams!’ and this isn’t a lie, at times when they are at full flow I could feel my face dripping from my skull.

You don’t need any hallucinogenic when listening to this album as it will take you on a journey on its own.

What absolutely amazes me is that a band of such obvious ability and talent is not yet known the world over and generic crap is populating our music charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

So do us all a favour and follow the below steps:

  1. Get on Sound cloud and listen to their tracks
  2. Getting liking them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter
  3. Most importantly buy the album from iTunes http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/curses/id496790498

CD Review: Ohio Sky

Curses

local_review-1.jpg

Unlike so many of their peers, the Cleveland stoner-metal band Ohio Sky stick to taut arrangements and sharp songwriting on their debut album. The group keeps a tight rein on its psych influences, focusing more on billowing textures than extensive breaks. Guitarist Vince DiFranco’s reverberating tenor sounds remarkably crisp and confident. Highlights include the pulsing “Anthem for the Artist” and “Instructions for Burying the Ark,” which is buoyed by melancholy waves of slashing guitar. Plus, the album’s tense title track boasts some of Ohio Sky’s most savage guitar work. It’s easily one of the best local releases of the young year.

Lifting the Curse

Ohio Sky finally release an album … and it’s great

by Michael Gallucci

Leave it to a stoner-rock band to make their debut album under illegal circumstances.

Ohio Sky‘s terrific new full-length, Curses, was supposed to be recorded at Ante Up Audio on East 36th, but the Cleveland quintet wasn’t happy with the sound they were getting in the studio. So they broke into the old warehouse attached to Ante Up, set up their gear, and made the album pretty much live, in single takes. The result is one of the best-sounding records to come out of Cleveland in 2012. “We’ve come a long way,” says singer and rhythm guitarist Vince DiFranco(pictured, center). “When the band started, it was a completely different idea. We were even an instrumental band for a while.”

It’s been kind of a rough couple of years. Only DiFranco and drummerEric Bambic remain from the original 2005 lineup. And after the release of the 2008 EP Apophis, it seemed like they hit one roadblock after another. “That’s why the album is titled Curses — we couldn’t catch a break,” explains DiFranco.

“Instead of trying to go for a political thing or a social-commentary thing, this is what the fuck’s going on in our heads.”

It sounds like the band has finally found some footing. Cursesexplodes out of your speakers with hammering confidence — even more remarkable, since DiFranco only recently stepped up to the mic, replacing the band’s original singer. And unlike so many other groups that blend prog, metal, and stoner sounds, Ohio Sky rarely overstuff their songs with needless showing off. The 13 tracks are tight, focused, and surprisingly melodic at times.

Ohio Sky recently recorded a four-song EP called This House Is Old and Filled With Ghosts, which is slated to be released in the spring. DiFranco calls it ethereal and spacey, and even kinda jammy.

“We just wanted to put another side of us out there,” he says.

We will be heading out to SUMA recording studios in 2 weeks to record a new EP. Its title is “THIS HOUSE IS OLD AND FILLED WITH GHOSTS”. We will be working with some very talented engineers on this project, Jim Stewart, Dan Millice, and Paul Hamman. Jim was our engineer when we made “CURSES” this past summer. Dan Millice did an amazing job mastering our last record up at the Engine Room in NYC so we are very excited to him involved with the recording side of things. Paul Hamman has owned and been the engineer out at SUMA for almost 4 decades, his experience with analogue recording is second to no one. This EP is going to show a more developed and focused side of our band that has not been seen yet. Check Back soon for a release date.

Van Gogh Acoustic Performance

11.1.11 @ 5:23 PMLeave a comment

We recorded this live version of Van Gogh because we wanted a chance to reinterpret one of the heaviest songs on our new record “Curses”. As an acoustic song “Van Gogh” takes on a far more subtle and nuanced sonic atmosphere. We would like to thank our good friend Stephen Harrison for letting us shoot this video in his home.
